Creating the Perfect Space for Your New Puppy

From our experience raising puppies, we've learned that giving them too much freedom to roam your home can lead to accidents. Puppies, when left to their own devices, are likely to pee or poop wherever is closest, often choosing a rug, mat, or specific spot to claim as their personal litterbox. Once a puppy establishes this habit, it can be challenging to break.

To prevent this, we highly recommend creating a designated space where your puppy can spend most of their time. A playpen is an excellent option, offering enough room for your puppy to eat, play, potty, and sleep. We suggest starting with a playpen that is at least 4ft x 4ft. While it shouldn't be as confined as a crate, including a crate within the playpen is a good idea for when your puppy needs a cozy place to rest.

Puppies are full of energy and need plenty of playtime outside of their playpen. However, we advise against letting them roam freely immediately after eating or upon waking up, as they will likely need to use the bathroom right away.

When setting up your puppy's playpen, avoid placing their bed too close to the potty area. If a puppy becomes accustomed to sleeping near their waste, they may either grow too comfortable with the smell or start avoiding the potty mat or litter box altogether. Similarly, do not place food or the potty area near the playpen door, as your puppy might step over these items when you come to pick them up.

By following these tips and creating a well-organized space for your puppy, you'll help them develop good habits early on, making for a happier, healthier home for both you and your new furry friend.
